An instant classic. Ingenious access to Gunks gravel. Amazing views on the High Point Rd.

NJ Transit to Otisville, not a short railroad ride, but it puts you within 10 miles of the featured climb: Roosa Gap/Cox Rd/ Craigsmoor Rd/ Sam's Point Rd, which totally front loads this ride. Water and restrooms at the end of climb in the Sam's Point Visitors Center.

The gravel road from there to Lake Awosting has just been opened (10/2023) after a superb rebuild.

Optional short hike up to the actual High Point Rock. You will leave your bikes at the trail head. Look at the OSM Outdoor map for directions.

You might get stopped in the Mohonk Preserve to purchase a day pass. Or you can avoid it and take 44/55 to 299 to pick up the route in New Paltz. but be forewarned that 299 has little to no shoulder.

If you leave enough time, you can return via Castle Point or Hamilton Point carriageways.

Should you be running a bit late for your train, you can save time by staying on Lenape Lane instead of the left onto the R2R trail, and going straight, thru the Gatehouse, taking the left on 299 and on to New Paltz.
